Phrasal Verb W

  • Wait on - to do things for someone, like a waiter or a servant
  • Ward off - to stop something that's harmful or dangerous from coming near ; fend off. 
E.g : 1) Many people believe that vitamin C can ward off the common cold.
         2) Did you know that garlic and crosses can ward off Dracula and other vampires?
  • Warm up - to prepare for sporting or artistic performance by doing exercises or practicing ; limber up
E.g : 1) Don't forget to warm up before the game starts.
        2) The choir sang some scales before the concert to warm their vocal cords up.
        3) Let's jog for a while to warm up our leg muscles. 
  • Wash away - If something is washed away, it is carried off by the force of running water, as in a storm or a flood ; sweep away
E.g :  1) The river flooded and many roads and bridges were washed away.
         2) The streets were clean after the storm because the rain washed away all the dirt and rubbish.
         3) I left my towel on the beach, and then a big wave came and washed it away.
  • Wash down - to drink something soon after eating food or while swallowing pills.
E.g : 1) I need a glass of water to wash down these pills.
        2) We had steak with salad and washed it down with a nice red wine.
  • Wash out - If an event is washed out, it is stopped because of rain ; rain out
E.g : 1) The final session of play in today's cricket match was washed out.
        2) This year's company picnic was washed out by a sudden rain storm.
  • Wear out - make one tired
  • Win back - to try to get something back after you have lost it
  • Work out - exercise
  • Write something down - to put something on paper
